BIBLE STUDY: Luke 3-5
Luke 3
- John the Baptist brought forth the message of FORGIVENESS; REPENTANCE & BAPTISM. He preached baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Repentance can be of two types –Metanoia which signifies repentance with a change in destination or direction and Metameloma which is repentance without any change. Judas Iscariot repentance was metameloma repentance where he took his own life due to remorse instead of turning to God for forgiveness.
- Baptism of Jesus: When Jesus was baptized the heaven opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove and a voice came from heaven “you are my son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased”. This scene reveals the triune characteristics of God.
- The genealogy of Jesus: In Luke’s account, Jesus is the 77th generation from Adam.
Luke 4
- The temptation of Jesus (desire of the flesh, authority, testing the faith and power of God): His first temptation was to turn stone into bread. Second, the devil offered him all the authority and splendour if he worshipped him. Lastly, the devil challenged if God would help him if he threw himself from the highest point of the temple. Jesus replied to the devil by quoting from the scriptures.
- Jesus returned to Nazareth where he had been brought up. At the synagogue on the day of Sabbath he read out the scroll of prophet Isaiah proclaiming that the prophecy of Isaiah has been fulfilled in their presence.
” the spirit of the lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim the good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the lords favour”.
- When people heard about the miracles and healings done by Jesus in Capernaum, news about him spread throughout the area and people with various sicknesses came to Jesus and he healed them.
Luke 5
- Calling of the disciples-Peter, Andrew, James, John, Levi .Peter and his brother Andrew became his disciples when Jesus said to peter he will make them fishers of men to bring the dead into life. James and his brother John also followed Jesus. A tax collector named Levi left everything and followed Jesus when he said to him “follow me”.
- Touching a person with leprosy was considered unclean and against the law yet Jesus touched and healed them. Jesus also healed the paralysed upon seeing the faith of the people lowering him from the roof.
- The Pharisees and the teachers of the law questioned on fasting of John’s disciples. Jesus answered,” can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while he is with them? But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them; in those days they will fast.”
The bible study was concluded with an open session for discussion. The service ended with the closing prayer followed by singing of doxology.
