Sermon by Pastor Thuamminlian
With the unfolding of a new year 2020, let us pause for a moment and send our eyes into our own selves, take a walk into our inner thoughts and conduct and see ourselves bearing umpteenth times the weight of our mistakes and sinful lives.
How often, like the disciples of Jesus, did our faith waiver and took undue advantage of the grace of God? Also, how often did we see Jesus take no time in restoring their faith? The resurrected Jesus spared no lengths in pursuing His disciples with His love even after they went back fishing! After He had risen from the dead, He told His disciples — and Peter — through an angel about His whereabouts inorder to restore them again.
Lessons learned : In retrospection, our lives may have messed up, and may get entangled even with all the fairness of our heart, but we can always have a fresh start with God. Like how Jesus revealed himself to His disciples after the resurrection from their place of troubles and fears, Jesus will always be there for us even in our darkest moment to give us a new opportunity.
Luke 13:7 So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, ‘For three years now I’ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’
Lessons learned : Cut it down. Yes, Time can be a demeaning factor when we took for granted the goodness of God. There is coming a time when you do not have mercy any longer if you do not jump into the purpose of your faith. We are to live out the gospel and make disciples for Christ. There will also be a meritorious reward after rapture in respond to how we use our gifts and resources. What then, shall we say when we stand at the altar of the Almighty God, who has loved us so dearly?
Exodus 33:15 Then Moses said to the Lord, “If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here..."
Joshua 5:13-14 .....He lifted his eyes and looked, behold, a Man stood opposite him with His sword drawn in His hand. And Joshua went to Him and said to Him, " Are you for us or for our adversaries?" "Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come."...
Lessons learned : Having the presence of God with us is worth more than the blessings or glory. Put less confidence in the self, and more confidence in the presence of God. Let our unforeseen future be guided by our commander, Jesus. At this onset, let the powerful prayer of Moses be our prayer as we welcome the year 2020.
