Knowing God’s Will
~ Pastor H. Biakson
I congratulate all the graduates in the name of the Lord. Now, you all have attained the age of marriage, license to drive, have voting rights and being self-dependent. So, you all need to seek the help of the Lord in all your endeavor. You are also expected to be involved in the society and in the church as well.
Once a child is thirteen, we need to train/treat them as grown up and not as a child, else we’re suppressing their mental growth. You also now have voice in the congregation and should certainly study and share your opinions. What is wrong, you got to do it right, be the pillar and not a guest.
What is biggest in my mind is not wealth or fame. But know God’s will, the One who can give all your desires. [Romans 12:1-2; Acts 9:5-6] As a child of God, our great desire ought to be to know His will, our greatest delight will be to do His will and our greatest danger is to refuse His will.
There are many who are rich, have high paying jobs etc without knowing God’s will. From today, to do his will should be your priority. Myths concerning the will of God are:
- Map myth – God will give you roadmap
- Misery myth – If I do the will of God, it is going to be painful
- Missionary myth – God’s will is just for a certain class of people; He doesn’t call ordinary people
- Miracle myth – You must have something dramatic in order to know the will of God
- Missed It myth – I missed it, I’m too old now, it’s too late!
- Mystery myth – God’s will is something that is hidden, and you don’t know it…you have to find it if you can
Three types of God’s will -
His Sovereign Will :
These are the thing God will do no matter what. God uses men to accomplish His sovereign will. The more you understand the sovereign will of God, the easier it will become for us to identify His will for us. [Galatians 4:4-5; Ecclesiastes 11:9,12; Revelation 20:11-15]
His Moral Will:
God’s right and wrong are “Thou shalt or shalt not.” However, the world says there’s no right and wrong. But, God does have standard of right and wrong. We see in His Commandments. [Exodus 20:3-17; Matthew 22:36-40]
For life partner/marriage, you may refer to 1 Corinthians 7:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:22; 1 Corinthians 6:14; Matthew 5:32.
For purity in life, refer to 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4.
His Personal Will:
God does have a personal will for each one of us. He loves and cares for us individually. God has specific plan for your career, occupation, ministry, spouses etc. [Matthew 6:9-34, Jeremiah 29:11]
Steps to know or discern God’s will -
Knowing God personally:
Knowing God’s will starts with knowing God (the Person of Jesus) personally. Until you know Him and experience Him personally, all other questions are futile and meaningless. [Acts 9:5]
Walking With Him (Worship):
Seek His guidance, be willing to do His command, be open to what He says and be yielded. [Romans 12:1-2] God’s will is practical and we are guided by His miracles, word, spirit, wisdom, providence and people of God. [Acts 9:3-7; Psalms 119:5; 2 Timothy 3:16; Acts 9:10; Proverbs 24:6; Acts 9:20-22; Acts 9:23-23]
