Luke 13:6-9 tells the parable of the barren fig tree. A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none. Then he said to the keeper of his vineyard, “Look, for three years I have come seeking fruit on this fig tree and find none. Cut it down; why does it use up the ground?” But the keeper answered and said to him, “Sir, let it alone this year also, until I dig around it and fertilize it. And if it bears fruit, well. But if not, after that you can cut it down.” This parable, however, does not indicate if the fig tree fared better the following year or if it met its end at the hands of the keeper. But surely, it tells enough of the fate that awaits us believers, who at the hands of the good and gracious keeper in Jesus Christ, are taken care of with good soil and plenty of water, if we should not bear fruit according to the desire of The Lord.
Salvation is received, for free, by all that believe; the price of salvation paid for by Christ in blood and agonizing suffering. What significant Love! Pity the man who would forgo this Love, and heed not the Word of God! For those who indeed accept the gift of salvation, however, it demands working out on our salvation. One must remind oneself over and over why Christ first loved us and how He made a way for us to be acceptable to The Lord. Then, there is but one thing to do on our part, which is, to bear fruit!
