Worship Service Write-up

Workshop on "Urban Missions" | August 10, 2019 | 1 PM

Consultation on Realization of EBC Urban Missions in Delhi
Resource Person : Rev K. Kamchinkhup

On an introductory note, we’d like to first highlight on how our ongoing work in missions and the new Urban Missions came together.

We are gathered here today in Delhi, the capital of India and the congregation gathered today here are Delhites, so it is the most relevant place to discuss this topic, with the right place and people.

Genesis 1:26-28 – God created man in the likeness of Him and to spread all over the world. So, God wants us to glorify him wherever we are. Now, as we are placed and live here in Delhi, in regards to Urban Missions, there can be a way that we can fulfill God’s original plan.

Colossians 3:17 – It is written “And whatever you you..” So, if we are saved by God, to manifest that, it is very much for us to own this Urban Missions. While we do understand that urban mission is very much started sans the tag of EBC, we would also very much like to take this up as our goal and mission too.

Ephesians 2:20 – As Jesus is the chief cornerstone, there should not be any inhibitions and the only consideration should be that if whatever we do pleases our Lord Jesus. EBC is only continuing what is already started by Jesus and earlier churches, and it is not starting something new. One of our purpose statement is to spread the Gospel and this Urban Missions is indeed very much about spreading the Gospel.

EBC is under a centralized system in line with global mission. With our indigenization policy, let’s take a look at where we stand and stages:

Pioneer (First Contact) : Dhemaji (started in 2012 and ongoing)
Paternal (Introduction to the gospel and win people to Christ; begin training indigenous leadership) : Manipur (started 1967 and ongoing)
Partnership (Begin working side by side as partners) : Nepal (started in 1982 andestimated end of stage by2025)
Participatory (The missions will participate when invited): Karbi (started in 1975 and estimated end of stage 2020)

Interesting thing about our field in Nepal (Himalayan Field) is that we don’t intent to follow the indigenization policy, but to continue reaching other parts of the country. It is also the most rewarding mission in terms of the data available as compared to other fields.

With our indigenization policy, it doesn’t mean that we cease but rather survey new fields like in the North East part of India like Assam and Tripura which have the lowest Christian percentage. And in the mainland India, we do try to expedite our partnership with national partners like IEM, FMPB, BIS and BIIS. Internationally, we have plans in China, Thailand and Myanmar in partnership with Overseas Missionary Frontiers, Worldwide Evangelization for Christ-IMM and Serving in Missions.

Now, comparing our churches in Indian cities and the Christian percentage in those cities, it is very much our endeavor to start this Urban Missions and take a step further.

Jonah 4:10,11 – My question is not why we should start Urban Missions, but rather, why not? The Biblical and practical reasons are: Jonah in the city of Nineveh, the work of Paul, Delhi EBC with God’s people and church, from Jerusalem to Antioch. While God is ready and are being blessed with the resources, the challenge is, is Delhi ready to be Antioch?

Views and presentation on the pros and cons of Urban Missions, and the challenges ahead as foreseeable today are seriously shared during the Consultation Session. Besides Pastors and Local Chairmen, from both the Local Churches (EBCC Delhi & Central Delhi), the list of Church leaders who shared their views/ make a presentation during the discussion are as follows:
