Aspects of Holy Communion
~ Pastor Biakson
Scriptural Reference: 1 Corinthians 11:23-32
1. Brotherhood due to the blood of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 10:16)
We all united by the blood of Jesus Christ regardless of our social status, race etc.
2. Symbolic (Matthew 26:28)
The flesh and blood represent the suffering experienced by Jesus Christ and through which we attained redemption. It is the blood of forgiveness.
3. Words of thankfulness (1 Corinthians 11:24)
Because of our sins, the body is of suffering. Are we ready for our body to be broken and be a new you?
4. Remembrance (Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 11:24-25)
The Lord wants us to remember Him. While at our daily chores, do we remember Jesus Christ as our saviour? Also, we need to remember Jesus as a good friend, look up to Him and share all our sadness, sorrows and not with our worldly friends.
Are we here with a heavy heart today? Remember Jesus, your good friend is always there for you. Even when in a broken relationship with God, He is there to be the bridge.
5. Proclamation of the death of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 11:26)
When we have the communion, it is the proclamation of the death of Jesus.
6. Reminder of the second coming (1 Corinthians 11:26)
We have hope for the second coming and are in anticipation for the same.
7. Table of the Lord (1 Corinthians 10:21)
It is about humility. In ancient times, it is a practice to wash the feet of guests. A servant with no rights serves his lord. Just as a servant, Jesus Christ took this form and served the disciples. We need to be humble and serve others just as our Lord teaches us, in words and action.
8. We need to introspect
Before we join the Holy Communion, we need self-introspection. Who are you? What is your status with God? Do you believe in faith? We may all have to turn back to Jesus after this introspection.
You may be inside a church, be a member of the church, but where is your soul? And, where is your soul headed?
The Holy Spirit must be near and within you. If you are spiritually down, you need to get back up. Also, you should know where exactly you fell. You must know where you are before and rise up again.
We need to know that while we may think we’re headed towards God, we may have been following the opposite path. So, let’s do a self-introspection and grace the Holy Communion.
Points for self-examination:
- Where are you? (Genesis 3:9)
- Where are you going? (2 Kings 5:25-27)
- Where do you land when you fall? (2 Kings 6:5)
- From where do you fall? (Revelation 2:4-5)
- Where are you headed to? (Genesis 16:6-9)
