Worship Service 23rd December 2012

With Christmas being just two days away Pastor V. Nenglian explained the nature of gift giving in the Christian context and how important the birth of Jesus Christ is for believers. Christmas or the birth of Christ is a commemoration of God’s love for his people. It is God’s gift of love to his followers. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son...” summarises this gift of God and we must believe in him so as not to perish but to have everlasting life.

Christmas is a testimony of God’s undying love for us even though we may not be worthy of his love and compassion. Parents have an unquestionable love and affection for their children even if society does not deem their offspring to be perfect. In their eyes their children are perfect and the best. Parents will always find ways and means to give a better life to their young ones. This, according to the Pastor, is exactly the nature of God’s love for human beings: his children who have been made in his image. Even if we are found wanting and undeserving of his love and compassion, God in his almighty benevolence made the greatest sacrifice and sent his only Son as a gift to us.

John 4:7-9 elaborates on how only someone who has love and compassion can understand the magnitude of God’s gift to mankind. 1 Corinthians: 13: 1-7 explains the nature of true love as being patient, kind and not proud. This insight is only possible in those people who love God because love comes from the Father. Just as a human father will shower all the love possible on his children our Heavenly Father has bestowed us with the greatest gift known to mankind: sending his Son in human form and offering the path of salvation through him.

Christmas therefore is: God’s gift to mankind

Proof of God’s love for mankind

Love comes from God
