The teaching of today’s Sunday School is taken from the text Mark 4-6 by Upa T. Kaithang. With a words of prayer and a brief introduction of the text Mark he started his teaching.
CHAPTER 4: 1-41 (Selected verse/ Changvom Mark 4:25)
In this chapter Parables are used so that it will be interesting for the listeners, easy to understand and make a sense out of which one shall be able to reflect about one selves.
THE PARABLE OF THE SOWER (1-20)
A seed which fell on the ground of good soil came up, grew and produced a crop, multiplying by thirty, sixty or even a hundred times as compared to those which fell along the path, or on the rocky places or seeds which fells among the thorns. This shows the importance of growing seeds in a good soil.
A LAMP ON A STAND (21-25)
As a lamp is never put under a bowl or a bed, the Gospel of the Kingdom of Gods is to be disclosed to everyone. And Jesus says that if anyone has ears to hear, let him hear and he further says that with the measures you use, it will be measured to you- and even more. And whoever has more will be given more: whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.
THE PARABLE OF THE GROWING SEED (26-29)
Like the growing of seed that sprouts and grows, the Kingdom of God is the same. The Growth of the Kingdom is beyond our understanding and knowledge.
THE PARABES OF THE MUSTARD SEED (30-34)
Though a mustard seed is one of the smallest seed that is planted on the ground, it becomes the largest of all the garden plants with big branches and even birds can perch in its shade. Likewise, the words of the Kingdom of God may be small as it started but beyond our understanding it can grow and becomes the largest.
JESUS CALMS THE STORM (35-41)
When the waves broke over the boat and it was nearly swamped, the disciple got frightened and Jesus rebuked the wind and said to the waves “Quite! Be still!” Jesus said to his disciples not to be afraid and question about their faith. Likewise we should have faith upon the Lord.
CHAPTER 5: 1-43 (Selected verse/ Changvom Mark 5:28)
THE HEALING OF A DEMON- POSSESSED MAN (1-20)
Jesus heals the demon-possessed man as he was asked by the man. Jesus sends out the demon and all the demon went inside the pigs. About two thousand in number rushed down the steep bank into the lake and were drowned. This men begged to go with him but Jesus said “Go home to your family and tell them how much the Lord has done for you, and how he has had mercy on you.”
A DEAD GIRL AND A SICK WOMAN (21-43)
Jairus asked to Jesus to come and put his hands upon his daughter who is dying. On his way, a woman who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years, who spent all she had and approach doctors but still suffering touch the cloak of Jesus with the thought that she will be healed. Jesus knew it and said to her “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your sufferings”. Jesus also healed the daughter of Jairus, he took her and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (Which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!).
CHAPTER 6: 1-56 (selected verse/Changvom Mark 6:11)
A PROPHET WITHOUT HONOUR (1-6)
Jesus was questioned at his home town when he went there with his disciples. Jesus said, “Only in his home town, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honour.” He was amazed at their lack of faith.
JESUS SENDS OUT THE TWELVE (7- 13)
The disciples were sent them out by Jesus two by two and gave them authority over evil spirit. And they were told not to bring anything and stay in the same place until they leave that town. This shows that they should have faith as well as not to seek pleasure. They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.
JOHN THE BAPTIST BEHEADED (14- 29)
John was the only person who was against King Herod who married his brother Phillip’s wife. At the birthday of Herodias daughter he was so pleased with her dancing that he promises what she want. As suggested by her mother she asked the head of John the Baptist. This is how he was beheaded.
JESUS FEEDS THE FIVE THOUSAND (30- 44)
As the Apostles don’t want to take responsibility they asked Jesus to send away the people. Instead, Jesus replied to them to give something to eat. He divides five loaves of bread and two fish. All the five thousand were satisfied and there were 12 basketfuls of broken pieces of bread and fish left over.
JESUS WALKS ON THE WATER (45- 56)
Jesus let his disciples went ahead to Bethsaida by boat, on their way the wind was against them and Jesus went out to the disciples by walking across the water. When the disciples saw him, they thought that he was ghost and get terrified. Jesus spoke to them and said “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” They forget about the loaves.
# 1 Peter 1: 25 “But the word of the Lord endures forever. And this is the word that was preached to you.”
