A Spirit-filled Life
~ Pastor Biakson

Why did the Holy Spirit come into our lives? It is because of our Lord’s prayer for us. After his resurrection, he ascends to heaven in order to make a request to Father God to send the Holy Spirit to us. So that the Holy Spirit can guide the believers do not feel alone. And for this we rejoice each day in the Lord.

Almost 2000 years ago today, God sent the Holy Spirit for us the believers to live with forever. The Holy Spirit will never leave us as it remains in us unlike in the Old Testament. Not only are we taking care of ourselves but the Holy Spirit also takes care of us. The things which we couldn’t do on our own became possible with the advent of the Holy Spirit within us. The Lord gave the appropriate amount of the Holy Spirit to each of the believers but we don’t exercise it. Thus, making us do things unsuccessfully.

In order to become true in our ways we should let the Holy Spirit guide us. And not the other way round.

How do we always have a spirit filled life and why is it important? The Holy Spirit is not just for the rich or the well off. It is for everyone who believes in The Lord. Why do we fear a spirit filled life? It is the spirit which will take care of us and our every need. In order to reap the benefits of the spirit one must allow the Holy Spirit to be filled eternally. [Ephesians 5:18] One who proclaims to be filled with the Holy Spirit can be one with no spirit. A true believer should always be overflowed with the Holy Spirit at all times just like the Nile during those times (31 AD).

The importance of Spirit filled life (Acts 13:52)

The first congregation was deeply filled with Christ. It was a beautiful communion of togetherness and moments for the believers. Some of those moments are found in these verses: Acts 2:4, 4:8, 4:31, 6:3, 6:5, 7:55, 9:17, 11:24, 13:9, 13:52. In order to attain a meaningful life we must let our lives be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit will lead us on (Ephesians 5:12)

The Holy Spirit is a command. It is for all Christians. It is with all seriousness that one should not be a drunkard and consumed by alcohol but instead be filled with the Holy Spirit. Being filled with the Holy Spirit should not be a choice but a must for all believers in Christ. And one who does not care about this hurts The Lord. For our lives are nothing without the Holy Spirit. Therefore, let us take a vow to be filled with the Holy Spirit in order to become closer to God.

What does a ‘Spirit filled life’ mean? (Ephesians 5:18)

It means to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. To not be in extremities but have a controlled balanced life. When the alcohol takes control of the person, they become drunk and out of control. But the spirit filled life is on the contrary makes us see things clearly and our lives become balanced and we become in control of our actions. [Colossians 3:15]

drunk spirit

As Christians we need to let the Holy Spirit take control of our lives. And in the Bible it says that anyone who does not need the Holy Spirit are liars.

What all are needed in order for the Holy Spirit to be filled in us?

  • One is to be born again and baptized [John 3:5, Ephesians 13, 14, Acts 2:38, Ezekiel 36:26, 1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19]
  • Obedience of the Lord [Colossians 3:15, Luke 24:44, Acts 1:4]
  • Let the Holy Spirit lead us [John 16:13, Romans 8:9,14]

If we do not allow the Holy Spirit to lead our lives we will end up with misery and bound by earthly desires. [Ephesians 4:30, 1 Thessalonians 5:19]

How to be filled with the Holy Spirit

  • Desire for God’s words [John 7:37-39, Psalm 42:1-2]
  • Waiting [Acts 1:4, Psalm 37:7, Isaiah 40:31]
  • Unending prayer and reading of the Bible [Acts 1:4, Psalm 1]

We must seek the Lord and allow Him in every aspect of our lives so that our lives can be filled with the Holy Spirit.

The fruits we reap when we are filled with Christ and the Holy Spirit

We become in control of every aspect of our lives and are able to win over people. People begin to see a changed person. [Acts 1:8] We grow in spiritual discipline. The Lord blesses even in our inadequacies.  We have a blessed life and we win over our desires and wants of our mortal body. [Galatians 5:16-17, Acts 20:22, Zechariah 4:6] We become Christ-like in our ways. [Galatians 5:22-25]

So that we don’t end up becoming Christians without the Christ, we must allow the Holy Spirit within us. And let this Pentecost be the beginning of our journey with Christ for the rest of our lives.
