SERMON ON THE SPIRITUAL BATTLE – Pastor Thuamminlian Guite

Lesson from David taken from 1 Samuel 17:1-40

1 Samuel 17:1  He says we are all living in a battlefield. Battling against our enemies which can come in any shape, size or at times it can be ourselves that we need to fight with the most. He says as the world is progressing and developing so are the technologies, the mobile phones which are meant to help us in our daily activities are instead taking control on our lives and we have become slaves to technology which has become our biggest enemy as it has stolen so many things from us. Therefore he says that our enemy is not far from us in fact they are a very important part of our lives. Like in this verse we can see that the Philistines were getting very close to the Israelites and had encamped at Ephes Dammim between Sokoh and Azekah.

1 Samuel 17:4-7:  Since they (philistines) were preparing for a war, they had to put their best foot forward. They sent their best weapon / champion- Goliath. Like how the philistines sent their best of the best forward, the enemy also knows all the tricks on how to defeat/tempt us. And therefore knows our strengths and weaknesses. Similarly, we should also know our enemy’s strengths and weaknesses in order to defeat the enemy.

1 Samuel 17:17, 22-24: David son of Jesse was a Shepherd boy. He was asked by his father to go look for his brothers who had gone for war. When David saw his brothers, he went to ask them how they were. As he was talking to his brothers, he saw Goliath coming forward and shouting his usual defiance. The Israelites fled in fear when Goliath stepped out.

1 Samuel 17:26: David had a different attitude towards the threats of Goliath. He was not scared. It was simply because he had faith in the true God and that he knew His God was greater than all of that.

1 Samuel 17:32-40: David volunteered to fight Goliath. On hearing this Saul said to David that he (Goliath had been a warrior from his youth and that David was just a young man. To which David answered that the Lord who had rescued him from the paws of the Lion and the Bear will rescue him from the hands of this uncircumcised Philistine. To which Saul agreed to send David on the battlefield. He put a coat of armor and bronze helmet on his head. Because he was not used to it he removed it. He picked up his staff and five stones from the stream along with his sling approached the Philistine.

From the life of David in this very Battle we can see that David did not bow down to the giant Goliath who was the biggest obstacle/enemy for the Israelites at that very moment. And because he knew the true God who helped him from the paws of the lion and the bear would definitely help him out of this one also. Likewise we as Christian youths will face our Goliath every single day every single moment of our lives. We should never back down or bow down in front of our enemies/fears instead fight the Goliath knowing and believing in the one true God whom David had put his 100% faith and trust in. But in order to gain real victory in the battle of the soul would be through our testimonies. And our greatest weapon is PRAYER.

We live in a metropolitan city where we face challenges/temptations/enemies as Christian youth every now and then, even more so than the non-believers. In order to fight/defeat them we need to constantly use our best weapon that is Prayer. Prayers can do wonders and is our only way to communicate with Him. While praying alongside we should make every effort to reach out to those who haven’t yet received the good news and should always try to be a living example in spreading the Gospel. The elder generations have played their part; it is our time to spread the word further down to the generations to come. Let our testimonies speak for itself.
