LESSON 2
(Acts 1:1-11)
By - Pastor Tuanglang Naulak

TOPIC: The Acts of Resurrected Christ on Earth
The lesson focuses on the works of Christ within the span of 40 days after his resurrection till his ascension to heaven and the time he spent with His disciples.
Memory Verse
“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

Broad themes of the lesson
1. Exposition of the book of Acts (Acts 1:1-2)
2. Jesus and his disciples/The promise of Holy spirit (Acts 1:3-5)
3. The interaction between Jesus and His disciples (Acts 1:6-8)
4. The ascension to heaven (Acts 1:9-11)

1. Exposition of the book of Acts
The book of Acts was written by Dr Luke during 62-64 AD at Rome. This book was addressed to Theophilus. The name in its literal translation mean God’s friend/God beloved. The book is a continuation of the book of Luke which was written by the same author.
2. Jesus and His disciples/The promise of Holy Spirit
The central message of Christ to His disciples after His resurrection was the Kingdom of God which He says was the main purpose of His coming. This highlighted the importance of the word of the kingdom of God.
3. The interaction with His disciples
Here the disciples were in expectation of the restoration of the earthly kingdom of Israelites and are longing for their salvation from the bondage of the Roman Empire. Their queries to Jesus pertain to this issue but the response from Jesus was on a very different note. He teaches them of His return and the importance of spreading the word of the kingdom of God. The spread of the gospel is their sole task which is expected of them.
To accomplish this huge task in hand, the disciples were promised with the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus further encouraged them to work without fear and to spread the word of the kingdom to Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.
4. Ascension to Heaven
The story here does not end with the ascension of Jesus to heaven. He ascended to heaven with a reassuring message to His disciples, the promise of His return, the second coming of Christ.

Lessons to learn
1. The obedience of the word of God
Jesus Christ accomplished His task on earth by the strict adherence to His father’s word and it is through this obedience that he achieved victory over evil. To this, a victorious Christian can be achieved only through the strict adherence to the word of God.
2. A strong foundation
The church as well as Christians should have the solid foundation in Christ, the one who conquered death and which can’t be moved. This required a continuous and close relationship with Christ, our solid rock.
3. The Complete ability
The ability to follow the word of God and the capability to achieve the task set before us comes not from our own strength and wisdom but through the fulfillment with Holy Spirit.
4. The importance of having a firm goal or aim
The church and Christians have to be guided by proper sets of goals which will help us achieve the colossal task set before us.
5. The everlasting promise
As the two person in white clothes convey a comforting message to the disciples, the churches and Christians live with this eternal promise, the return of our King.
