LESSON 4
(Acts 2:1-13)
By- Pastor Biakson
TOPIC: The Coming of the Holy Spirit
Background
The disciples have waited for the coming of the Holy Spirit promised by Christ himself for 10 days after the ascension of Christ. This promise was fulfilled on this day and it shows the credibility of the promise of God. Speaking in unknown tongue in this context does not mean speaking something that is illegible but words that can be understood by every listener in their own language.
Objective
The coming of the Holy Spirit and the consequences it has on the life of the disciples and their work towards the expansion of the kingdom of God.
To show the importance of the Holy Spirit in the life Christians and the church.
Memory Verse
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4)
Broad themes of the lesson
1. The prerequisite conditions for the coming of the Holy Spirit
2. The events that unfold on the day of Pentecost
3. The signs and witness of the Pentecost
1. The prerequisite conditions for the coming of the Holy Spirit
Pentecost in its literal translation means the fiftieth day which is the Jewish feast between the Passover and the feast of the tabernacle. It is a celebration of the first fruit.
On the day of the Pentecost, the disciples were together at ‘one place’ and in ‘one accord’. It is believed that this room is the same upper room where Jesus dined the last supper with His disciples. The ‘togetherness’ of the disciples and the rough 120 peoples in the room in mind and spirit is an important aspect of the day.
2. The events that unfold on the day of Pentecost
A sudden sound from heaven swept over the room like a storm and occupied the room. There was fire in the form of tongue on the head of each people in the room and all are filled with Holy Spirit and speaking in different tongue.
3. The signs and witness of the Pentecost
On the day of Pentecost, a large crowd from different places of Judea gathered at Jerusalem which totaled roughly around 1, 20,000. These people witness the miracle that unfolds that day. People from different places speaking in different languages hear the words of the disciples in their own language.
Significance of the Pentecost and its importance in the life of Christians
1. The Pentecost marks the beginning of the church and it laid its foundation. The churches of today trace its inception with the coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
2. The gospel which was exclusive to the Jews was made available for all on this day. All kinds of people from different places witness the miracle of the Pentecost and heard the gospel from the disciples.
3. The Holy Spirit can change a person and one who is filled with Holy Spirit can do wonders.
4. The power and capabilities that we received through the Holy Spirit is solely for the glory of God.
