Holy Communion Service

Though every worship service on Sunday is sacred and special, Holy Communion service is considered to be of utmost important and special.  Most of the church members tried to attend the mass until and unless there is some unavoidable circumstances, like today’s UPSC Civil service exam.   Indeed, the Holy Communion reminds us of the suffering that Jesus Christ has to endure in order to save us and it gives us a reason to be excited for the service!!

In accordance with the theme for today’s worship service, the Pastor read out from John 6:51 which say, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.  This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.” This was followed by the Pastor leading the congregation in mass prayer.

The Worship Team then leads in praising and worshipping God through songs such as “Nangbang omlou hi, Immanuel nakliam apan, Kris sisan pha tuibang hong luang and Toupa’n anbang hon itna.

Offerings prayer was held by Upa Damsawmthang.

SERMON:

Today’s sermon was delivered by Pastor T. Vungkhansuan of Hebron EBCC Church, New Lamka.  As a part of his introductory speech, he mentioned that he has come for medical treatment and is very grateful for the hospitality provided by the church members.  He also shared that the prayer team from his own church are continually praying for their brethren in Delhi.

The visiting Pastor based his sermon on the following scriptures:

i)                    Luke 22:14-20

ii)                   I Corinthians 11:23f

According to the sermon, the following points should be kept in mind while having a Holy Communion. .

1).It is a special gathering

As we can see from the Bible, Jesus specially called for the twelve disciples to be a part of the Holy Communion. It is only for the selected few and only those that Jesus considered close to him were allowed to partake in this Passover.  This shows that it is a special gathering meant only for special people.  Since we are also allowed to partake, it means we are very special to God.

2).It is done in remembrance of Jesus Christ

Jesus told his disciples “do this in remembrance of me”.  This shows that he wants us to remember him and feel his presence among us.  No matter what situation we are in; either good or bad, we remember of his love and the great things he has done for us when we have the Holy Communion.

3).A New Testament is brought forth through the blood of Jesus Christ.

There are many differences between the Old and the New Testament

  • The Old Testament makes us think about the fearsomeness of God.  For example, it asks an eye for an eye.  But the New Testament shows about the love of God and his mercifulness.
  • The Old Testament condemned us before God but the New Testament justify and heal us through the Lamb of God.
  • The Old Testament condemned us before the Elders while the New Testament sanctified us and forgive our sins.

Holy Communion is thus about the forgiveness of our sin and salvation though the blood of Jesus Christ.

Announcement from the Local Pastor:

iii)     A Pastoral Prayer was held for our fellow church members, Miss Rose Mary and Miss Jelina Niang who are going for Bible studies in Trivandrum Bible College, Kerela  and Gilead Theological Seminary, Bangalore respectively.

The Holy Communion was organized by the Local Pastor with the assistance of eight Elders.

Before serving to the congregation, the Pastor read out the laws which states that one should be a full communicant member and already baptized.  He/she should also s introspect him/herself so as not to do any injustice to the flesh and blood of our lord.

This was followed by a prayer of thanksgiving and dedication of the Holy communion to God.

All the eligible church members partake in the Holy Communion by coming to the stage and took it from the elders who were serving them.  At the end, the Elders and the Pastor himself partake in the Holy Communion.  The Pastor then had another prayer of thanksgiving and for the Holy Spirit to bless the church members.

The song “Kris sisan pha tuibang hongluang” further enthralls the congregation with the spirit of the Holy Communion and the service ended with a benediction by the Pastor.
